Your calls are working!
In a press conference this afternoon, House Education Chair Richard Bennett reiterated that the teacher and assistant teacher pay raise bill is a priority for that chamber and said they are eager to get a compromise bill on Gov. Reeves’ desk. Speaker Gunn said that the House is sending a strong signal of its commitment to students and teachers. Lt. Gov. Hosemann issued a statement saying that the Senate looks forward to meeting with the House and finalizing a historic teacher pay raise. All are indicators that a teacher pay raise should cross the finish line soon!
Though no official conference committee meeting has been held to date, it seems there is work happening behind the scenes to craft a bill that includes some of the best features of both chambers’ plans.
Rep. Kevin Felsher, in remarks to the press, indicated the messages that legislators received from teachers and parents have increased the sense of urgency around the teacher pay issue. Thank you, thank you to those of you who have called and asked your friends and family to call! It makes a difference.
We promise to keep you posted as HB 530 works its way through the conference process. In the meantime, have a great weekend. Together, we’ve got this!
