National Association of Charter School Authorizers Calls for Closing of Failing Charter Schools

In November 2012, the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) launched a campaign to improve the overall quality of charter schools and increase the frequency of closing failing charter schools. NACSA is challenging states to tighten charter school laws to increase the likelihood of success and to do a better job of holding charters and their authorizers accountable. Data indicates that between 900 and 1,300 charter schools are performing in the lowest 15% of schools within their states.

The “One Million Lives” campaign calls for authorizers to close failing charters and replace them with twice as many excellent ones, with the goal of reaching one million students who currently are not receiving a quality education.

“Many authorizers are, in fact, getting it right – and those are the ones with the best schools, including many that are educating high numbers of at-risk students. But too many others are making decisions too influenced by politics, faulty analysis, and bad laws.” – Greg Richmond, NACSA president and CEO, November 28, 2012
