Legislature Misses Deadline for Funding Schools

Apparently, legislators aren’t hearing us. Let’s say it a little louder…

You have 4 billion of our dollars in your bank account. We want our schools fully funded!

After failing to come to an agreement on the school funding bill by tonight’s 6:00 deadline, House and Senate leaders announced that they intend to pass resolutions extending legislative deadlines. We expect them to use that time to come to an agreement that fully funds our public schools.

Consider this:

  • Mississippi teachers and school leaders have gone to the mat to ensure our children a bright future, rising to every challenge, making more progress faster than any other state.
  • In the last two decades, Mississippi has gone from 50th in grade 4 reading achievement to 21st, passing 29 other states.
  • Superintendents have warned legislators that, with federal pandemic funds running out and inflation eating into their budgets, they will be forced to cut critical teachers, staff, and programs if they don’t get additional funding.
  • The state has an extra $1-billion in recurring revenue and reserve accounts are overflowing.

And yet our legislators can’t decide whether or not they should fully fund our public schools.

You have every right to be angry. And your legislators need to understand just how frustrated you are.

Please text or call your legislators today with this message:

We know the money is there, and we want our tax dollars used to fully fund our public schools.
Do not end the 2023 Legislative Session until that is done.

Our children and teachers deserve the very best that we can give them, and with the state flush with cash, we certainly can give them adequate school funding. Please call your legislators. Ask others to call, as well. We elected our legislators to represent us, and we want them to fund our children’s schools and secure their futures. Let’s make sure our legislators know that. Together, we’ve got this!
