The charter school bill that passed the House yesterday remains on the calendar on a motion to reconsider (vote again). Word is that there is a move to amend the bill to allow only students in districts rated D or F to cross district lines to attend charter schools, a move we encourage. Today, the House passed SB 2158, which changes the MAEP calculation to be based on enrollment rather than average daily attendance. We support this move and thank the representatives who voted for it. See that vote here.
The Senate has not yet taken up the House charter school bill (HB 1044), which was amended in committee to allow charter schools to locate in districts rated C, D, and F without local board approval and to allow all students to cross district lines to attend charters. The deadline for action on that bill is tomorrow.
Please ask your senator to vote NO on HB 1044.
