Senate Education Committee Wants Input on Year-round School

The Senate Education Committee wants your thoughts on year-round school.

In an effort to learn more about a “balanced calendar” or year-round approach to school, the Senate Education Committee will hold a public hearing at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, in Room 216 of the Capitol. The committee will hear from Corinth School District superintendent Dr. Lee Childress about that district’s experience with a year-round calendar, as well as representatives from the Mississippi Department of Education and the Southern Regional Education Board. The public is invited to attend.

A year-round calendar typically does not add days to the school year. Rather, the calendar is adjusted to include longer, more frequent breaks throughout the year with a slightly shorter summer break than is provided with a traditional calendar.

The committee encourages you to submit public comments on the year-round school concept. All public comments must be submitted in writing to kishee@senate.ms.gov no later than Monday, November 2.

If you are unable to attend the hearing in person, you can watch the livestream here. It also will be available for later viewing on the Legislature’s YouTube channel.

Please thank our Senate leadership for inviting our input on important education matters. Together, we’ve got this!
