We asked for CHANGE in this election, and we think you’ll be surprised at how well you delivered.
Despite some bitter disappointments, there are some bright spots for public education.
You – parents, educators, public school advocates – made this election all about our children and our public schools, and, as a result, we heard loads of campaign promises about investing in our future. YOU made that happen!
The work you did during the primary election to flip seats in favor of public schools was remarkable. Between the primary and the general elections, we have 9 new pro-public education House seats. The House of Representatives will look much, much better in 2020! This is the kind of CHANGE voters can and did deliver for our children.
The Senate will be presided over by a Lieutenant Governor who has promised to bring teacher salaries to the Southeastern average, to fully fund our pre-k collaboratives and special education in public schools, who supports the MAEP and wants to work toward its full funding, and who has vowed to correct some of the most glaring offenses in the ESA voucher program. That is good news.
Now we will turn our attention to our most important tasks:
• communicating clearly to legislators and state leaders what our children and our public schools need to be successful, and
• holding our elected officials accountable for their promises.
Thank you for your tireless work on behalf of our children and our public schools! We didn’t get everything we wanted, but we made a lot of progress. How we follow through is of utmost importance; state leaders and legislators need to hear from you regularly and be reminded of the commitments made during their campaigns.
