Mississippi’s public school students and teachers have reached record-setting levels of achievement – again!
State student assessment results are in, and they show that Mississippi students are continuing to increase their proficiency rates in English Language Arts, math, and science. Hats off to our terrific public school teachers, students, and parents and the communities that support them!
The percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced on 2023-24 assessments reached a record high of 47.8% in ELA, 56.3% in math, and 63.4% in science. U.S. History dropped slightly from 71.4% in 2022-23 to 70.9% in 2023-24. School and district accountability ratings, which are based in part on these test scores, will be announced in the coming weeks.
“The continued rise in student achievement across Mississippi is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and school leaders,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans.
Meanwhile, the voucher crowd continues to pump out its disinformation in hopes that you won’t believe all the great things happening in our public schools. Their master plan is to convince you that the impressive achievement gains garnering national attention for Mississippi’s public schools somehow aren’t real. After all, if lawmakers understand the terrific return on investment they get in our public schools, they’ll be highly unlikely to divert Mississippi’s public school dollars to unaccountable private schools (which have no public accountability data whatsoever).
Please make sure that your legislators know you are proud of the wonderful work being done in our public schools and that you want our public funds restricted to public schools.
Public school educators at every level are staying laser-focused on their goal: bringing all Mississippi students to proficiency. To that end, the Mississippi Department of Education has announced eight regional family literacy meetings to ensure that families of children in kindergarten through grade three have the tools they need to get their students reading on grade level and well prepared for the 3rd grade literacy test. Please share this information with families of students in kindergarten through third grade, and mark your own calendar for one of the following dates if you have a K-3 student (no registration is required):
Congratulations, Mississippi teachers and students! We are proud of you, and we promise to do our part to ensure that you have the resources and support you need to continue reaching for the stars. Together, we’ve got this!
