On Tuesday, November 3, voters in House District 70 (Hinds County) and House District 77 (Rankin and Simpson counties) will elect representatives to serve out the terms of two legislators who, sadly, passed away earlier this year, Rep. Bo Brown and Rep. Price Wallace.
With public schools increasingly under attack, it is more important than ever to elect lawmakers who are committed to public education.
The first step is knowing where the candidates stand on public education. Starting today, you can learn that on our Candidate Q&A website.
We asked candidates for their thoughts on issues like school funding, teacher pay, pre-k, and the voucher scheme that takes millions of dollars away from public schools to fund private schools. You can see their answers here.
When candidates don’t respond to our questionnaire, it could be just an oversight. If candidates in your district haven’t responded, ask them to do so now. Send them this downloadable Candidate Q&A survey, and encourage them to complete and return it as soon as possible. Be sure to use your own social media pages to share links to candidates’ answers – let’s get the word out about their positions on public education!
We have had reports of people being removed from voter rolls, so it is critically important that you check your voter registration prior to the official deadline to ensure that you are still registered. You can check your registration online here. If you are no longer registered, please contact your Circuit Clerk’s office to update or correct your voter registration status prior to the October 5 deadline.
With the voucher lobby ratcheting up its campaign to shift public funds into private schools and professional-level salaries for our wonderful public school teachers on the line, it is critical that public school supporters be engaged in every election. A few minutes of your time can ensure that we elect people who will support our public schools. Our kids are counting on us, and together, we’ve got this!
