Final Redistricting Hearing Tonight in Jackson

The final public hearing on redistricting will be held at 6:00 this evening in Room 113 of the State Capitol at 400 High Street in Jackson. The Joint Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting has been traveling the state, providing the public an opportunity to offer comments and suggestions about the redrawing of Mississippi’s legislative, congressional, and judicial districts. The hearings are being livestreamed on the Mississippi Legislature’s YouTube channel. Written comments may be submitted to the Joint Committee by email to ted.booth@peer.ms.gov or by postal mail to Ted Booth, P.O. Box 1204, Jackson, MS 39215-1204.

You can view recordings of the seven hearings held in other areas of the state on our website
and find additional information about the redistricting process here.

Members of the public also may access, by appointment only, the Joint Committee’s redistricting computer system and/or submit their own redistricting proposals. Those interested in accessing the Joint Committee’s computer system or submitting their own plans for redrawing districts should do so in accordance with the instructions laid out in this Public Access Policy document.

The Legislature is expected to convene before January to redraw legislative districts, which will be in effect for the 2027 statewide election. In the past, this type of redistricting has yielded gerrymandered districts that heavily favor one party or the other, which tends to make Mississippi’s general elections less meaningful and participation in the primary election of paramount importance.

The deadline to qualify to run for office in the 2027 statewide election is February 1.

Two of the most important things you can do for our public schools and the children they serve are to:

  1. ensure that there is a great public school candidate on every primary election ballot, and
  2. vote in the primary election.

Please get engaged now, and help us spread the word. Together, we’ve got this!
