Alert: U.S. House Subcommittee Proposes to Slash Public School Funding

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies is meeting TODAY at 4 p.m. CST to discuss a budget proposal that would slash an estimated $91-million from Mississippi’s federal education budget, including eliminating 27% of Title I funding.

Title I provides funding to schools with high rates of poverty to ensure that children in low-wealth households have the resources and services they need to succeed.

Please ask your U.S. Congressman to oppose any cuts to Mississippi’s federal education funding:

Congressman Trent Kelly – Congressional District 1
District Office: 662.841.8808
U.S. Capitol: 202.225.4306

Congressman Bennie Thompson – Congressional District 2
District Office: 601.946.9003
U.S. Capitol: 202.225.5876

Congressman Michael Guest – Congressional District 3
District Office: 601.693.6681
U.S. Capitol: 202.225.5031

Congressman Mike Ezell – Congressional District 4
District Office: 228.864.7670
U.S. Capitol: 202.225.5772

Mississippi public school teachers have made excellent use of Title I funds over the years, and our state’s economically disadvantaged students now rank first in the nation in fourth-grade reading when compared to their economically disadvantaged peers in other states. Decreasing these funds would be devastating to the children they are intended to serve.

A U.S. Senate subcommittee has passed a budget with increased funds for both Title I and special education. Urge our congressmen to do the same in the House budget.

Please make that call as soon as possible, and ask others to call, as well. Our children and teachers are counting on us, and together, we’ve got this!
